Extraits du compte rendu "Over the last years, research on the early modern portrait has gained momentum. Moving beyond the later seventeenth-century theoretical dismissal of the portrait as an allegedly inferior genre, scholars have studied portrait iconography, issues of likeness, identity construction, and the genre’s poetics. Still largely missing are studies assessing the effects of portraits on their viewers, and it is the great merit of Diane Bodart’s book to have taken this topic seriously. [...] [...] this is an admirable and important study deserving a wide and international readership."
